After taking a couple days off from picking since my five and one Saturday performance, I am ready to get back at it and make a few predictions for college basketball today. Remember that we use our own rankings, which can be found on the College Basketball Rankings page. Yesterday, LSU nearly beat Kentucky while Georgetown asserted dominance in a big road win over Seton Hall. Today’s action features some solid action, despite not that many games being played overall.
#3 Game of the Day: Wyoming (19-5, 8-3 Mountain West) @ San Diego State (18-6, 8-3 Mountain West)
San Diego State is coming into this game as a ridiculous 11 point favorite. People are all of a sudden very down on Wyoming, a team who beat Colorado State twice, due to one embarrassing loss to Air Force. However with the way this team normally defends, I don’t see this game becoming a blowout at all. When the two teams met earlier this year, at Wyoming, San Diego State grinded out a 60-52 win. While neither team scores the ball a lot, both ranking near the bottom in the country in points per game, Wyoming is the far more efficient offensive team, ranking 38th in the country in field goal percentage. They play the game at a slow tempo and rarely turn the ball over. San Diego State is led by potential first round pick Winston Shepard but don’t have a go to scorer like Wyoming does with Larry Nance. I say Wyoming not only covers the ridiculous spread, but actually pulls the road upset, winning 62 to 58.
Follow us after the jump for the remaining two games
When these two explosive offensive teams met three weeks ago at Indiana, the Terrapins got blown out, losing 89 to 70 in a game that could have been worse. Indiana’s three headed monster of Yogi Ferrell, James Blackmon, and Troy Williams all went off and were simply too much for Maryland. Indiana shot a ridiculous 60% from the field and also hit 15 out of 22 three pointers. However, I do not expect things to be so easy for Indiana tonight. Maryland has traded wins and losses for the last month and are coming off a tough loss at Iowa, They are a team trending in the wrong direction but I think they put their best foot forward tonight. Star freshman point guard Melo Trimble will have a big game, but it won’t be enough, as Indiana wins a tough one, 82 to 79.
National Game of the Day: #6 Villanova (21-2, 8-2 Big East) @ Providence (17-7, 7-4 Big East)
Villanova is coming into this game as a 4.5 point road favorite over one of the most talented teams in the Big East. Providence has arguably the best one two punch in the country in LaDontae Henton and Kris Dunn. Dunn is averaging an absurd 15.1 points, 6 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 2.6 steals per game and I just don’t know who can slow him down for Villanova on the defensive end. Henton is the Big East’s leading scorer and he plays particularly well at home. However, Villanova is hot right now, blowing out their last four opponents while locking teams down defensively. The Wildcats most consistent player over this four game run has been Darrun Hilliard and if they are going to win tonight, he needs to have a big game both offensively and defensively. Ultimately, I think Henton and Dunn are just too tough to guard and Providence scores a huge upset victory, 75 to 69.
